1 minute, 1 point, 0-1 from behind the arc, 1-3 from the free throw line
2 plane crashes, 2x survived, 5 family members passed away
Monday night was another example of why sports are so great and how some things are bigger than the score of the game. Michigan Freshman Austin Hatch came into the game with just 2 minutes of playing time under his belt but got another chance to play on Monday against Coppin St. Hatch got fouled with 1:03 remaining on a three point attempt by Sterling Smith. Hatch stepped to the line with a chance to score his first points at the collegiate level. He missed. Hatch regrouped and got his 2nd of 3 free throws. He made it. A survivor of 2 plane crashes which killed a total of 5 family members made a collegiate point. Hatch missed the third free throw and missed a three point attempt before the game ended but the one point he scored overshadowed everything. It overshadowed the 72-56 win Michigan had over Coppin St, the 16 points Ricky Doyle had and the great all-around game Derrick Walton Jr. had. Hatch exited to a standing ovation from the Michigan home crowd, a great scene. Hatch, who is now 20, survived a plane crash in 2003 that killed his mother and two siblings. He then committed to play basketball at Michigan in 2011 and shortly after got into another plane crash that killed his father and step-mother. The second plane crash left Hatch in a coma for two months with life-threatening injuries. It's remarkable that he is still alive today and even more remarkable that he can still play basketball, for a D1 school too. When asked about Hatch sophomore Zak Irvin said, "He's one of the hardest working kids I've ever met. It's just nice to see that pay off in front of everyone." Coach John Beilein also added, "I told Auston earlier, 'Just shoot it -- the Lord will take care of it. It almost went in, but I'm glad he was able to just get in there and get to the foul line and put one in." It may just be one point on the box score but it means so much more to Austin Hatch. It was a great sight to see the Michigan bench go crazy after he made a free throw and to see their home crowd give him a standing ovation. For a freshman with his story who won't see much playing time all year it was nice to see him score his first points in front of Michigan's home crowd. He may not have any impact on Michigan's season this year but this will still be one of the coolest moments of the season. This is another reason why sports are so great and how there are some things more important than the score.
